Source: Evan El-Amin/Shutterstock“I wrote the criteria for personality disorders,” says Frances, professor emeritus at Duke. The public diagnoses being bandied about are inaccurate and “miss the point,” he argues. They ignore the criterion that symptoms must be causing distress and impairment. “Donald Trump causes distress to others, not to himself. He is rewarded for his behaviors.”There is sickness, Frances contends, but he believes it is in society in general. “We are ignoring real existential threats—of overpopulation, of climate, of inequality.” The cure for this illness, he believes is political activism and electing officials who can be trusted to face “the real problems.” Those most in a position to diagnose are, with the exception of the petitioners and those on the media circuit, sitting out the question of the year.—Hara Estroff Marano.
The diagnosis needs to be done by qualified, experienced, well regarded psychiatrists. Not the pop-psych, small time, crap-college professors that write for PT.Most psychologists are worthless B.S. Very few have real insight or the imagination to provide a diagnosis that is more then just a left political statement.Real, established, Psychiatrists from accredited medical schools are the only ones that should be allowed talk about this. Not these pop-psych, Trotskyites like the two head-in-ass authors of this article. If you look at the photos of the authors of this article, you can see they are millennials and gen x-ers. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they're unwitting flying monkeys of the Democratic Party and its associated deep state/banking/military cabal. They parrot the talking points of the Democrats and adopt 'Trump Bad' thinking because that's what they were told to do.
They just don't realize that what they are supporting is assuring endless wars and predatory banking for the financial gain of a tiny elite who toss out a few liberal sounding goals for them to latch on to. Meanwhile Dems like Hillary Clinton have signed on to carry out the cabal's bidding while also tossing out those liberal crumbs. Trump wants to end the cabal, and so the flying monkeys have been sent out scream Trump Bad Trump Bad and think they are superior noble liberals like they've been told they are. I had informally assessed him to have a comorbidity of Antisocial Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder, but Malignant Narcissism is actually a more thorough fit because it accounts for his paranoia and sadism also.Berglas and Frances strike me as apologist hacks incapable of simple observation or even reading the news.In what universe is Trump rewarded for his behavior? He has the lowest approval ratings in history. His inauguration inspired the single largest protest in the history of the United States.
Cities and states across the nation are publicly vowing to 'fight' his totalitarian policies with everything they've got. Democrats are boycotting a vote on several of his cabinet nominees. The list goes on. Whatever “reward” he is enjoying, he has not earned through acquiring the good will of the majority of the people. Instead, he has likely snagged it illicitly via the lies, cheats and manipulations of Mother Russia.Frances asserting that Trump doesn’t show any signs of distress and impairment are highly suspect disqualifiers because in this context it implies those earning a diagnosis cannot be expected to function adequately when it’s been well established that those with APD and NPD tend to proliferate high profile, high pressure, professionally successful positions: CEOs, surgeons, lawyers, etc. Second, I’d argue he IS showing signs of distress: he's easily put on 20 - 30 pounds in the last several months, often a sign of acute distress.
His aides need to regularly veer him from the television and late night Twitter tirades since he obsesses on his popularity to the extent that it impedes him from his presidential duties. His savage displays of vengeance have lost him the respect and cooperation of a bipartisan Congress, nearly all but the far right media, and entire sovereign nations. That reflects impaired functionality. The inability to sustain the barest of interpersonal, national and international unity and diplomacy all reflect impaired functionality and regular volatile distress.Berglas’ comment, however, is the most worrisome: “The fact that Donald Trump mocked a reporter is deplorable but doesn’t mean he’ll be faster to press the nuclear button.” No, you’re right, Berglas. Trump outright saying he wants to start a nuclear arms race with Russia means he’ll be faster to press the nuclear button.Clinicians’ dispute over Trump’s diagnosis reflects the differing of opinion commonly found in this field. Get ten mental health professionals to agree on a diagnosis and I’ll give you five bucks.
It’s not a hard science. But in terms of whether or not to diagnose in the first place, they would do well to accept there is a professional obligation to more than that of the abstracted individual. They have an obligation to the welfare of the larger societal whole. It’s preposterous to assert that a fifteen minute in-person consultation would yield more reliable data than 30 years of publicly documented behavior, which is what Trump’s life offers.Gartner will be on the right side on history. This is absolutely ON POINT. I dealt with a person suffering from narcissistic personality disorder and he is exactly like Trump minus the success. And trump is overt while my ex friend was a covert.
Nonetheless, very dangerous individuals with very low self esteem. There should be a new law enacted by Congress that anyone seeking the office of the presidency of the US, needs to be able to go through a psychological evaluation.
This current man child is unfit to lead. He doesn't have the temperament, thick skin or maturity to lead this nation.
He needs to be removed invoking the 25th amendment. Our elected officials are doing us all a big disservice the longer this clown stays in office.
Trump is a brillant leader, probably the most capable leader in the world. He is the only person who was able to fight the establishment and restore America and the Free World.
The West is about to fall. The Islamofascist invasion is a mortal danger. If you don't support Trump, you support Islamofascism. You are pretty much the equivalent of support Hitler.Psychologists are mostly brainwashed leftist pseudoscientists, beta males, islamophiles. They are crooked. They are part of the problem.
You guy would have 'diagnosed' our leaders in WWII and let Hitler win. You are the most noxious and dishonest people on Earth. What do you believe would happen if the establishment tried to overthrow Trump? The 2nd amendment people, the police forces and much of the military would resist the coup. You would have civil war with some of the CIA plus snowflakes on one side and all the other people with weapons on the other.
'To illustrate how offbase you are, first, I lived in Sweden for many years.' Many people live in areas without too much immigrants.
The establishment/intelligentsia/social parasites know how to avoid these areas. They know how their kids can go to safe school, avoiding the abominations their fake moral imposes on others. The establishment/intelligentsia/social parasites secretly believe they can get away with kissing Hitler's hand.
In the end, they are going to be enslaved like the other. The West has mental AIDS. The youths are mentally enslaved so they cannot resist the nazislamist invasion. And of course, the ennemedia repeats that the real threat is Vladimir Putin! And that Donald Trump, the brightest leader today, is crazy.' Antifascism' (intellectual AIDS) is spreading in the medias. Anyone who points out that most criminals are immigrants is sued. Describing reality is a crime now.Antifas are committing crimes and suppressing free speech in the name of free speech; they are allowed by the leftist, Marxist, Leninist, Stalinist, Maoist, Pol Potist running 'elite' (social parasites) to commit crimes as the 'good guys', not as the neonazis that they really are.The people are more afraid of vanished threats, like Soviet Russia and German nazism and are hypnotizing themselves to not see the incoming abomination. The media, the police forces, the justice system are actively helping the enemy.
They are traitors, as much as the rogue juges who illegally oppose Trump's legitimate immigration orders. Think professional phycologist need to start to talk about the working methods of pathological narcissists.
I am not a professional but what I can work out from the Web is that they are like crime bosses 'it's all in the family' so they keep there close family to them moving to followers.Top narcissists use mass hypnotise by creating fear and confusion. (Look at me and keep looking at me I am good and will save you from the bad world out there.) think religious organisations like the Mooneys. People who have been hypnotised responded with one word answers 'Fake news' or 'conspiracy' they are not using there frontal lobe for critical analysis so jump to unreliable answers.Narcissists create paranoia and end in disaster like Waco Massacre.
The good news is that the FBI are experts on this type of stuff.I would like to know from experts how more deal more with narcissists? I think one of the answers is to not Panic Keep carm and carry on. Don't engage too much it will all sort it self out in the end and don't forget to have fun. There is NO rush to diagnose from afar here. I've often wondered, what the heck does 'evil' mean, anyway?I just don't like the use of that word.It sounds like it is attributing really bad behavior to some supernatural power, and it just cannot be explained in human terms. I think it tends to let a person off the hook when their behavior is called evil, as if they are not responsible. They were somehow put up to it by other forces, not merely themselves.Awful, horrific, mind-boggling bad behavior is sometimes committed by human beings, no matter how difficult that is to process.Just my two cents.Trump? Deeply sensitive to criticism, deeply insecure, probably impotent, and addicted to fame.
Dangerous and impulsive. Ironic, the reality star seems to be out of touch with reality. And why does he have a picture of his father in the oval office and not his mother?? Anonymous wrote:I guess you'd have to give him all of the standard tests in person.because diagnosing him with the 'news' has been an exercise in mayhem, and that's already been done. What these hacks don't get is that Trump uses a 'Lose to Win' approach to getting his way.
His greatest advantage is to be underestimated - he even invites it.Creating controversy and limited chaos creates turbulence in established systems and serves to change the rules of engagement.Often the guy who changes the game gets to write the new rules. Trump has been doing this his whole career. These geniuses are too smug to see this. They lament and rant and yet, offer no solutions or ideas. Instead of indulging in this poo-poo pants meltdown, a true professional would be offering ideas on how to engage Trump and help change his mind. You won't find that level of imagination and initiative here on Psychology Today. Excellent, thought-provoking comment. If these so-called mental-health professionals who think they know so much are really so smart, why haven't they figured out how to become a billionaire or President of the United States? If you don't like Trump's policies, then criticize them in a rational, mature way, guys. Using pseudo-evidence to attack his character so that everything he says or does is interpreted as a sign of pathology is the ultimate ad hominem argument and may be a reflection of your infantile jealousy of his success.I don't support all of Trump's policies or appointments, but I can see that he is an exceptionally intelligent and capable individual - and a courageous one at that to put himself in the danger he is now in for standing up the 'establishment' the way he has.Grow up!. I am a Trump supporter, yet I think it is 'possible' he will attempt some actions that are over the line. But I believe in American and our system, and I KNOW that any 'truly' unconstitutional actions will be struck down by the judiciary, and he also needs the support of congress. So quit freaking out. It will all be okay.BTW, Obama is the one who set the precedent of attempting unconstitutional executive orders.
He was struck down on multiple occasions, especially when it came to overreaching his power in regard to immigration. Did you get upset when Obama broke the law and the constitution?
I doubt it. @Masher: Your beliefamily in our system does you credit, and normally you would be correct to trust that it will control any illegal or damaging actions Trump might attempt to take.Unfortunately, you may not be aware of the steps Trump - with the full knowledge, approval, and yes, participation of Congress - has already begun to take down the judiciary. Congress, which you correctly state has the power to curb these abuses, is fully on board with all Trump's plans, as evidenced by the dozens of bills they've already passed nullifying, rescinding, repealing, and blocking existing laws and regulations, in addition to the hundreds of bills they've proposed since the first day of this congressional term that do the same, and worse. If you truly do know how the system works, and you do care about this country and the integrity of our government, you might want to start following these bills, which are being introduced and passes on a daily basis. This information is, as it always has been, public record easily available for everyone to read. I strongly suggest you look into this issue as soon as possible as you sound like a genuinely concerned citizen. @Anna.I can't agree with your anxiety.
The reality seems to be that you do not like the bills that the conservative congress and president are making. They have every right to undo, or change previously written laws. In fact, that IS our system. The congress makes the laws, and the presidents signs them. If they exceed the boundaries of the written constitution, then those laws are struck down by the judiciary. Most of us agree that this is how the system is supposed to work.
The problem arises when judges like to pretend they are supposed to have the power of legislating This is a very dangerous precedent, as 1 or 3 or 9, people are in charge of 'making' laws to which their is no recourse. So I am not worried about congress doing their job; although sometimes I don't like the laws they make. This article, and the mission of the 18,000 professionals who signed the petition is not about 'executive orders'.not sure how your rant fits in.No one here is even discussing Trumps politics - it's the dangers of his personality disorder that's the problem. And a major problem at that. Finally - Obama did not sign any more executive orders than any other president.
You're repeating sound bites. Look up the record by yourself for yourself.
He's no longer the president by the way.The mental health community owes it to the American people to not be silent - the Goldwater Rule is a non issue, there is data available on Trump going back 50 years - including information about his childhood. Stop hiding behind the Goldwater Rule and do your jobs!. The first Trump rally we had to turn around because the road was blocked by Anti- Social Snowflakes that were used to getting their way by having a tantrum like a two year old Narcissist.Obama created all these Snowflakes by spoiling them with free phones, healthcare, and everyone gets a trophy! You don't have to work for anything! There are enough rich people to pay for you!The truth is there is not enough rich people to pay for the lazy Snowflakes. Rich people who are already rich can just stop working or pull back on clients. You only pay taxes on money that you earned for that year. That's why Trump won.He won because middle America had had enough of Obama's agenda. To have healthcare go from $235.00 a month to $1200.00 a month is pathetic.
That number is for the cheapest insurance.I think Americans started seeing Obama as a Tolitarian Dictator after he started punishing people for not signing up for his heath care.In 2008 I was told that I was a Racist for not voting for Obama.3 weeks after the election I went on a trip to Australia. Took my daughter into one of those stores where they play loud music because the clientele was under 28 years old.Right in the middle of the store was a stack of t-Shirts with Obama's picture on them. I found it unnerving that Obama's Marketing Team was reaching all the way around the world to condition people to except him.Instead of bashing our new president with a very low blow, which I don't believe the writer of this article should be a practicing Shrink. That kind of stuff should be very private. Did you know that the majority of welfare recipients come from red states? Which means that blue states are paying for red states to get 'free stuff.' But by all means, keep throwing around hyperbolic assumptions, with no evidence to back it up.
Did you know that California - an extremely blue state, has the 6th largest economy in the world? That means that people in California work and make money for the state. Did you know that one of the the poorest states, Kansas, was run into the ground by a Republican Governor who forced 'trickle down' economics on the state, and lowered taxes on the wealthiest? The real vandals are the corporations who are skimming money from the public purse and taking it for themselves - which is why the wealth inequality gap is growing so fast.
people own HALF the wealth. If you have some actual statistics to back up your ridiculous claims, please provide them. If you think Obama is a totalitarian dictator because of his health insurance plan (which, if repealed by Trump, will cost thousands of lives) you need to do some research on what a real totalitarian dictator looks like.
It's clear you've been brainwashed by the fox/breitbart propaganda machine, because you spout the same talking points, with zero evidence to back yourselves up. Trump is the real danger here - his own staff are leaking like crazy about mentally unhinged he is, and the chaos happening in the Whitehouse.
Wow, you really have a skewed image of we snowflakes. We have jobs, pay our taxes, care about other people and protecting the rights of all people. It is interesting that you did not defend Trump's mental health but focused on attacking Obama. You have to admit he was stable and rational. You may not agree with his politics, but he was a better model of a leader than Trump. I believe that Trump is in a position way over his head and we, all of us, will suffer. Obama's 8 years were not perfect, congress was no help, but he got a lot done.
The country will miss him. I rather like the term snowflake. This Snowflake is not going to melt. Yes.I read somewhere that the reason the Premiums for Obozo Carewere so low, at first, is that he was stealing money from Fannie Maeand Freddy Mac to to help defray the costs.I don't understand why they skyrocketed later, but at least we knowwhy the early Premiums were so low.Obozo was just a slippery Low Life Liar and a Crook. And Yes, his Long Form Birth Certificate is an amateurish Forgery.I've studied it long and hard, but REAL experts in PDF's. BMP's,JPG's, FONTS, SCANNERS, COPY MACHINES, etc, have long ago declared it to be an OBVIOUS FORGERY done by Amateurs. Not to mention that he first uploaded the Short Form, followed bytwo slightly different uploads of the Long Form with as many asseven Layers on the first upload of the Long Form.(Should be only 1 Layer in a PDF.
Two at most.)Much prodding!!Many more problems.Long story.Probably born in Indonesia - certainly not Hawaii.Even the microfilm of Birth Announcements appears to betampered with, with his 'Birth Announcement' inserted later. Not to mention 'Father's Race: African'. (Long Form). There is no such Race as 'African', and Hawaii has never used such a designation.AMATEURS!!Obozo was never eligible to be President. He should be arrested and imprisoned. ALL the so-called 'diagnoses' in the DSM-5 are bogus. They were all INVENTED, not discovered. They are as real as presents from Santa Claus, but not more real.
Do your research. Allen Frances was chair of the DSM-IV committee, but he blasted the DSM-5 as the hogwash it is. You're just throwing labels around like a drunken darts game, hoping something sticks somewhere. And, you relying on a media that is rife with mis-, and dis-information, and which regularly spins, and hides facts.
For example, I bet you don't know that the Clinton Global Initiative fired 22 employees and shut it's doors. The media is suppressing that story.
What ELSE don't you know?. Anonymous wrote:ALL the so-called 'diagnoses' in the DSM-5 are bogus. They were all INVENTED, not discovered.

All full-time CGI employees will have their jobs with benefits at least through the end of the calendar year,” said the spokesman. The foundation is providing departing staff with “a wide range of resources that include career coaching, access to job leads in a variety of fields, and resume and job search strategy,” the spokesman said, explaining, “we informed CGI staff of this transition more than four months before the end of the year, and have provided information about CGI-related roles that will continue.' Just wanted to ALSO show they are getting assistance finding other jobs a well as job coaching for other jobs.
They aren't being left to dry like all those contractors.
