Hi Folks, I went ahead and got a 504, based solely on the fact that it took a 5x4 negative. (always better to jump in with both feet and no knowledge ).KHB Photografix can supply instruction manuals for DeVere enlargers. De Vere / DeVere 504 4x5 Enlarger Instruction Manual; 2.
De Vere / DeVere 5108 8x10 Enlarger. Here at Second Hand Dark Room we offer de vere, s/h enlargers, second hand dark rooms and much more.I'm assuming it's an early model as there's no model number such as Dichromat 1V etc. It has 3 Dial adjustable filters and a lever to lift them and it's cream/brown. It came with a Rodenstock Rodagon 150, 5x4 carrier and Transtab. I've got a few specfic questions now rather than a vague request for advice So here goes.Does anyone know the filter setting for VC paper (Ilford) Grades 1-5?
Do I need glass plates for the Negative carrier? Would a Viponel Analogue timer be ok?
(I have the plug to suit the Transtab). Or what would you recommend? I was intending to order the manual, In your opinion, is it worth spending £25 on? Thanks in Advance, Richard. You'll find the required filter settings printed on the data sheet that comes with the printing paper. Up to you - a glazed carrier keeps the neg flat and enables you to focus accurately across the whole plane. An unglazed carrier means you have two fewer surfaces to keep dust-free when mounting the neg, and that there is no danger of Newton rings.
But if the carrier you have is unglazed I don't think you have the option of puttting glass in - it will be made to work one way or the other, most likely. No idea - sorry. Generally speaking pretty much any enlarger timer should be usable if you fit the right plugs. Can't speak from knowledge of the De Vere (mine is an LPL), but really there's not much to know about using an enlarger, so I wouldn't bother myself, unless there's something that you really can't figure out. £25 is a lot to spend for information you could almost certainly get from other users on the web. Try for probably several bus-loads of people using 504s. Thanks Huw, I had another look on the Ilford site and found something I'd overlooked. It appears to indicate that the Kodak settings would be used with the DeVere (amongst others), unless I'm misinterpreting it.
I think the Glass mounts fit in place of the glassless mounts, in any case if there's no asolute need I may as well try it without.Yes £25 does sound a bit steep, maybe there's more than the basics in it. I'll give APUG a try just to see if anyone actually bought it and if they thought it worth the money. Thanks Again, Richard Hi Nick, if I find anything I'll put it up.
Hi, Here's some info that I gathered re DeVere 504 enlargers. Most of the information applies to the early type single lamp 504 Dichromat, (Cream/Brown, 3 vertical wheels to adjust filters) which is what mine is, but may also apply to the later type with knobs to adjust filtration (Black?/Cream)If you check the APUG forum you'll find some answers to questions that I asked. Negative Carriers, Either Glass or Glassless.
Both come in 2 parts, top and bottom. They have a beveled edge which allows them to be clipped into the carrier. The metal (glassless) carriers are available in various sizes from 35mm Mounted Slide to 4x5.AFIK if you use the Glass type, one size does all, the glass plates are 4x5, one plain one anti-newton. Metal Masks seem rather expensive, £30+/- on ebay.Timers, Basically any timer will do if it can switch sufficent amps. Single 24v 250w lamp enlargers need a 6amp timer.
The cheapest is probably the Viponel S15 mechanical, which I use. Various lens carriers are available, The flat type works with all lenses from 60mm to 150mm. The shallow recessed type works with 50mm. There is also a deep recessed type for lenses smaller than 50mm.AFIK all are available in 42 or 39 thread. Dichroic Halogen bulbs, 24/250 are the same as used in Disco lighting equipment. I bought Phillips A1/259 at £4.50 each on ebay from Euro-tech Manufacturing. Users Manual, probably worth getting.
Includes parts list, servicing info, cable replacement etc.Try KBH Photographix. Here are a few links. The above information is accurate to the best of my knowledge. If you choose to follow it then double check the facts. If you think that there are errors then feel free to comment/correct.
Cheers, Richard.Just as an intro I am starting to get into film photography after a long absence. A beginner beginning again.
Bought myself a MF camera and in the process (forgive the pun) of developing my own negatives. Not sure at the moment whether to go down the route of scanning the negatives and using a printer; or go back to a traditional wet room? I need to find out more of what is still involved. If I want to print my negatives I will need an enlarger and I believe the devere enlargers are among the best, in terms of producing good quality prints and also in build quality. I want eventually to go onto LF so perhaps need a 504?Can anyone give me advice on the different devere models and am I going down the right road?
Thanks for all your help. I am looking on ebay for a DeVere, though it was mentioned that a Durst can be equally good. When you start looking into the type of emlarger to go for, the Devere always comes out at the top. From what I have read, the 504 will meet most, if not all, printing needs. The smaller 203 also seems good, and again appears will meet most printing needs.
Pricing for secondhand is not an issue as I have seen 203 selling higher than a similar 504; when you would expect it to be the other way round. Is it better to have a free-standing model or a bench model (if size is not imnportant)for printing? Gta Vice City 5 Game Setup Free Download For Pc. I guess I am just going to have to take the plunge when one comes along, and just buy it, then try it out!Not sure if anyone is still interested, but for what its worth I used a DeVere 504 with cold cathode head for 25 years from 1977, almost exclusively for 5x4 but sometimes for 6x6 and 35mm. It was (still is) a wonderful enlarger, built like a battleship, very high precision and absolutely reliable. The advantages of cold cathode head: diffuse light minimises negative dust, scratches or defects; it prints softer that collimated head (which artificially increases contrast); and cold source prevents negative distortion through heat expansion.Possible disadvantages: B&W only and won't work with multigrade paper, due to noncontinuous spectrum of cold light source.
Because the light window is 5x4, exposure times are longer for smaller neg formats. Can be annoying on 35mm but no problem on 6x6 though. You may have already found a DeVere but here's a few pointers - I've been using them for 20 years. The 405 will allow up to 4x5 negs using a couple of different light sources. The light source will most often be a colour head with adjustable dials for amounts of Cyan, Magenta, Yellow; the colours are transmitted through opalescent perpex and is a reasonable choice for printing traditional BW paper.
The other choice for BW is a condensor head that uses an opalesceent bulb together with condensor lenses: big blocks of glass that are hard to find and expensive so don't drop them. Good points is they are very sharp but downside is they will show up every blemish and grain of dust you really didn't want.
Other choices are Multigrade Head - becoming so rare you shouldn't even bother looking for one.The microchips were one-offs and when they go bang that's the end of your system. Finally Cold Cathode heads. I only ever used one at college and they seemed the work of the devil. I know some people use them but some people swear by hairshirts and enemas - it's up to you! Things that can go wrong with DeVere's 1.The counterweight spring breaks - replacement are hopefully available from Odyssey Sales for an extortionate amount but you're stuffed without one.
Cable breaks - you may well get a bicycle repair shop to make one or go to Odyssey That's about all that goes wrong. I've not used a 203 but I'm sure they are well made, just restricts you to. 35mm/120 film I think?.? Durst enlarger are OK if they have been looked after (not kicked around) They have lots of plastic in their construction and in use feel like driving a Fiat Uno compared to a VW Golf.
